2011 KALEIDOSCOPE AWARDS
Elizabethtown Area High Schoool Graduating Seniors

HANNAH HESS, Music Award

and
ALANA KRIEGER, Visual Arts Award

The Fourth Annual Kaleidoscope Award for the Visual Arts was presented by the Lynden Gallery to a graduating Senior showing promise in, and planning further study in the field of Visual Arts. The Artist was selected by professional juror, Claire Giblin who currently holds the position of Curator of Exhibitions at the The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A $100 award was given to ALANA JAEL KREIGER for her sculpture, and her work will be on display at the Lynden Gallery in July and August of this summer. Kaleidoscope, a Celebration of the Arts in Elizabethtown, was held in 1998 for the benefit of the Elizabethtown Public Library and featured Music, Visual and the Literary Arts.

Alana says of her work, "I love to work with clay- it is my favorite medium. It feels great to take a block of nothing and create something with passion and desire to it. It's exhilarating. When I'm working, I can think of nothing else. I hope to continue on with art for the rest of my life whether or not I become a recognized artist is up to God, but I know I shall always be creating."

The First Annual Kaleidoscope Award for Music was in honor of Betty G. Long of Elizabethtown College, for her tireless efforts in mentoring young women to lead with confidence for the future. Presented by the Lynden Gallery, a $100 award was given to HANNAH HESS, as a young woman exhibiting leadership skills and planning future study in Music. The recipient was chosen by the music staff at Elizabethtown Area High School. The Kaleidoscope Awards are presented to provide recognition not only to the recipient, but to the teachers, parents, and librarians who support the Arts in the Elizabethtown Community. Awards were given at the Elizabethtown Area High School's Senior Award Night on Thursday evening, May 19th.

Hannah plans to attend Grove City College to major in Music Education. She was an alto in the school choirs and played flute and tuba in the band.

A reception and parlor concert at Lynden Gallery are being planned for early August, featuring the two award winners. Prevous recipients of the Kaleidoscope Award for Visual Arts were ALEX ESBENSHADE in 2010, SHELBY WILLIAMS in 2009 and DREW WINEY in 2009. Without the dedicated efforts of teachers like Kevin Goss, Steven Barraclaugh and Dana Baxter, and the school district's ongoing commitment to the Arts, such talents will not be tapped.
